{"id":802,"date":"2015-03-26T12:58:09","date_gmt":"2015-03-26T19:58:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/modernslavery.calpress.org\/?p=802"},"modified":"2015-03-26T12:58:09","modified_gmt":"2015-03-26T19:58:09","slug":"fire-relief-for-ak-press","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/modernslavery.calpress.org\/?p=802","title":{"rendered":"Fire Relief for AK Press"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>Fire Relief for AK Press &amp; Friends<\/div>\n<div><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/2dbdd5116ffa30a49aa8-c03f075f8191fb4e60e74b907071aee8.ssl.cf1.rackcdn.com\/3871148_1427239352.7052.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"480\" height=\"320\" \/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<p><strong>In the early morning of March 21, the building behind AK Press caught fire.<\/strong> Two people\u00a0lost their lives. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.insidebayarea.com\/breaking-news\/ci_27759253\/oakland-fires-at-two-apartment-buildings\" target=\"_blank\">The fire<\/a> \u00a0moved to\u00a0the mixed-use warehouse\u00a0building AK shares with\u00a01984 Printing and 30+\u00a0residents.\u00a0Everyone in the AK building got out safely, but several units were completely destroyed.\u00a0There was extensive water and smoke damage to other units, including the ones occupied by AK Press and 1984 Printing.<\/p>\n<p><strong>On the afternoon of March 24th, the City of Oakland red-tagged the building, which prohibits AK from occupying it. AK doesn&#8217;t don&#8217;t know how long this will last, but it obviously means AK can&#8217;t conduct business as usual.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Many of you support what AK Press does. Although many of our readers may not realize it, among many other publications AK also distributes <em>Modern Slavery<\/em>. A lot of people have been asking what is the best way to help AK in the midst of this disruption. AK reports that already the outpouring of support and mutual aid has been amazing, and AK has raised some emergency funds from donations via PayPal and has organized the coordination of a larger fund drive.
